Khaddar vs Lawn vs Cotton: Which Fabric Should You Wear, and When?
By the Brandox team · Published 17 October 2026 · 6 min read
Every year the same question comes up as the weather turns: is it time to put the lawn away and bring out the khaddar, or can cotton get you through? If you buy suits online, the question matters even more, because you cannot rub the fabric between your fingers before you pay. This guide explains how lawn, cotton and khaddar actually differ in weight, feel and care, and how to match each one to the weather, the city you live in and the occasion.
The short version: lawn is the light, crisp summer fabric, khaddar is the thicker, warmer winter fabric, and cotton sits comfortably in between. The rest of this article explains why, so you can decide for yourself rather than just following the calendar.
What is lawn?
Lawn is a lightweight, finely woven cotton fabric. It feels smooth and slightly crisp against the skin, and it is thin enough that air passes through easily, which is why it is the default choice for Pakistani summers. Embroidered lawn is very common for dressier suits, and printed lawn is just as popular for everyday wear.
There are a few things worth knowing before you buy. Because it is thin, lawn creases easily, and lighter shades can look slightly see-through in strong light, so many people wear a slip underneath or choose a trouser in a matching colour. Heavy embroidery on lawn looks beautiful, but the embroidered area can feel stiffer than the rest of the shirt.
Lawn is not a winter fabric. On its own it offers very little warmth, although some people layer it with a cardigan or shawl in the cooler weeks of autumn. If you like the lawn look, you can browse our lawn suits for warm-weather options.
What is khaddar?
Khaddar is a woven cotton with a thicker, slightly textured surface. Compared with lawn it is heavier, which makes it warmer, and it holds its shape better. The word also refers to traditional hand-spun, hand-woven cloth, but on shop shelves today it usually means a sturdy winter cotton.
A new khaddar suit can feel a little coarse the first time you wear it, and it usually softens with washing. Because it is heavier, it takes longer to dry, and it can shrink more than a thin fabric if it is washed hot. On the plus side, khaddar generally needs less ironing than lawn, which many people appreciate on busy winter mornings.
When winter arrives, our khaddar suits are the place to start if you want something warm that still looks put together.
What about plain cotton?
Cotton suits sit between the two. They are softer and heavier than lawn but lighter than khaddar, and they are easy to wash. That makes cotton a good everyday choice, especially in spring and autumn, when the weather is neither hot nor cold.
Because “cotton” is a broad word, it helps to read the product description carefully. Two cotton suits can feel quite different depending on the weave. When in doubt, ask the seller how heavy the fabric feels, or compare it with a suit you already own. You can see what we have in cotton suits.
Lawn, cotton and khaddar side by side
- Weight: lawn is light, cotton is medium, khaddar is heavy.
- Feel: lawn is smooth and crisp, cotton is soft, khaddar is textured and warm.
- Best season: lawn for summer, cotton for spring and autumn, khaddar for winter.
- Creasing: lawn creases easily, cotton moderately, and khaddar usually the least.
- Drying time: lawn dries fastest, khaddar takes the longest.
- Transparency: lawn can be slightly see-through in light colours, while khaddar rarely is.
Which fabric for which season in Pakistan?
Pakistan is a big country, and what you should wear depends on where you live. The calendar is only a rough guide; the temperature on the day matters more.
Karachi
Karachi stays warm and humid for much of the year, and its winter is mild compared with the north. Lawn and cotton do most of the work. Khaddar is usually most comfortable from about December to January, especially in the evenings, and many people in Karachi prefer a lighter khaddar over a very heavy one.
Lahore, Islamabad and the north
Winters here are properly cold, so khaddar is a true winter staple, often worn with a shawl or sweater. Cotton works as a transition fabric in October and March, when mornings are cool but afternoons are still pleasant.
A simple test
If you would reach for a light cardigan before stepping outside, khaddar is probably the right choice. If you would not, cotton or lawn will be more comfortable. It is not scientific, but it works better than guessing from the month.
Which fabric for which occasion?
- Everyday wear and work: printed lawn in summer, cotton in the shoulder seasons, plain khaddar in winter.
- Winter family events and weddings: an embroidered khaddar suit with a dressier dupatta is a comfortable, warm choice.
- Summer events: embroidered lawn with a lighter dupatta keeps you cool through a long evening.
- Formal evenings: many people move to silk or chiffon, which drape differently and feel dressier than cotton fabrics.
How to care for each fabric
Always follow the care label on your own suit first. As general guidance for cotton-based fabrics:
- Lawn: wash gently in cool water. Turn embroidered pieces inside out, dry in the shade, and iron on the reverse side while the fabric is slightly damp.
- Cotton: wash in cool to lukewarm water, and avoid hard wringing. Iron on the reverse side.
- Khaddar: wash in cool or lukewarm water, do not wring hard, and give it plenty of time to dry. Expect it to feel softer after a few washes.
If you are buying unstitched fabric, ask your tailor whether to wash it before cutting. Some tailors prefer to pre-shrink fabrics such as khaddar so that the finished suit does not shrink after stitching.
How to read a product page before you buy
When you shop online, a few lines on the product page tell you most of what you need to know. Look for the fabric name, the piece count (1, 2 or 3), whether the dupatta is included and what it is made of, whether the suit is stitched or unstitched, and which sizes are available.
Remember that photos are taken under studio lighting, so colours can look a little different on your phone screen. If the exact shade matters, such as when you need to match a trouser or dupatta, ask before you order. On Brandox, each listing shows the fabric, piece count and sizes, and you can ask us questions on WhatsApp from the contact page.
A quick way to decide
- Check the temperature where you will actually wear the suit, not just the month.
- If you would wear a light cardigan outside, choose khaddar. If you would not, choose cotton or lawn.
- If the weather is hot and humid, choose lawn.
- For a dressy occasion, add embroidery or a more formal dupatta rather than a heavier fabric than the weather can take.
- Check the care label and make sure you are happy to wash it the way the fabric needs.
